Making your own 10" Letter Black Sign

After a customer who was building their own Black Sign for 10 and 20 inch Black Sign letters called, I had they send this picture. And, my email response follows:

After our call, I spoke to the manufacturer. With the smaller letters (8 inch and 16 inch on 4 mil coroplast), the letters can snap in. With the 10" and 20" which are on 5 mil coropolast, the track is just a "guide" to keep the letters straight. In the winter time, the letters are too cold to "snap" in. So, he recommends getting a small washer and screw for each letter. And, attaching the screw/washer to the top left corner of each 20" letter. The 20" letters will NOT be "snapped-in" at the top and bottom--only at the bottom. And, then at a minimum, on the 10" letters, the far left and right letters should have a screw in them to keep that row of letters from blowing off the sign face.

This was a response to a customers email:

Are custom fonts available for an execution like this? If not, what font(s) are used? The manufacture said he will develop one custom font for you. If you want 16" or 18" or 21" for the 21 inch tall modules, he will develop one. Already, there is a 14", 12" and 7" font.
Can you customize or regulate the scrolling speed? Can you keep the letters static if needed? I have attached the programming guide to help with these questions.(If requested I can send to whoever is interested)
How wide is the seam between the panels? The manufacturer used the words "seamless". They edges do butt right up against each other with VERY minimal seam.
How are these usually hung? Are their places to drill or hang off hardware in the back of the panels? We only need the front side to be lit. There are bars on the back that customer can screw to the surface.
What are the time and usage limitations of these panels? Can they run non stop for weeks/months at a time without overheating or wearing out? The signs have a 3 year warranty. I know he honors this warranty. I had a customer in Canada who used the sign outdoors. And, one of the tiles went bad. The manufacturer stood behind the tile and replaced at no charge to the customer.

Customizing your Magic Master Changeable Message Sign

As businesses are still trying to use their dollars more effectively to bring in MORE customers, they continue to want ideas as to how they can do this. And, the Magic Master product line lends itself very easily to this. The Magic Master product line consists of the Swingers, Springers, Tip 'n Rolls, & QLAs. The biggest benefit of purchasing signs within the same "family" is the letters are interchangeable. The 4 inch letters from one sign are the same as the 4 inch letters are on the other signs. But, I lured you into this article with the promise of customizing....

The picture above is of the Deluxe QLA sign. I have told many customers that purchasing a Deluxe Magic Master sign is a good start. The deluxe sign panel is a sign panel that "jumps a track". Instead of taking up one track space, it takes up 2 track spaces. And, if a new Magic Master sign owner takes their deluxe sign panel to their local sign shop, he can tell the sign shop, "I want a panel just like this with my logo and phone number on it." Even though the new panel will take up two slots, it allows extra info to be packed into a smaller area than it would be otherwise. And, if your local sign shop does not have the blank Magic Master panels, they are available here. These sign panels only will work for the 24 inch X 36 sign faces.

If you have a XL or Roadside Swinger Magic Master sign, you can also do the same type of customizing. The blank panels are not available from the manufacturer, but your local sign shop should be able to provide these for you. And, if the custom header is done correctly, it will bring some nice color to your sign and ensure that your sign catches the eyes of your would be customers.

LED Sign + Windows 7 = Easy to set up

Unfortunately, even anti-virus software does not keep you from getting a virus. And, a couple of weeks ago, this is what happened to me. I did that fatal click that made my life chaotic for a few days. And, when I got the computer back, I had a brand new clean version of Windows 7 installed on my computer. Although this is good, it meant I had to reload ALL of my programs. And, installing the programming software was somewhere near the end of the list. And, as stated above, the software set up VERY easily!

Although setting up the sign using the serial port has always been pretty easy, hardly anybody does this anymore. That is why a USB-adapter is always included with all of the signs that hook up to a computer.
After installing the Windows 7 driver for the USB, most of the hard part was done.
I needed to make sure the port assigned within the software matched the port that was assigned when the USB driver was installed. (Troubleshooting Guide)
And, I had to right click on the LED programming program and run as administrator.
Once the cables were ALL connected and the sign was plugged in, I was programming messages with my Indoor LED sign pretty quickly.

Yes, I know I may have some knowledge that made me skip a couple of steps, but REALLY it was quite easy to do. Vista is a little tough, but Windows XP and Windows 7 should both go pretty smoothly.

We have sold velcro banners in the past that had the velcro attached in strips to the banner. But, that prevents the letters from going on in angles. AND, it limits the spacing on the banner. Our new and improved banner removes all of those barriers. The new velcro changeable banner has the WHOLE front of the banner covered in velcro. The fall can sometimes be a challenging time of year when selling signs on-line. And, this week had its normal ups and down. If problems are going to happen, it might as well happen on one of these weeks. And, unfortunately, this week chose to be accommodating....

My virtual 800 number company was purchased: I have been using My1Voice.com for a number of years. It allows my staff and I to work even though separated by 1200 miles. Earlier in the week, the phone calls did not seem to be making it to me when my staff "pointed" the 800 back to my line. And, I just attributed it to a "whoops". But, when it happened again Tuesday, and when customers emailed and complained of odd phone noises, it seemed something needed to be done. And, after tracking down the new company, eVoice, the issue did get resolved. Yes, I gave an ear full, and yes, I pointed out an email on Wednesday saying, "Welcome to eVoice" was a bit presumptuous. Because, I also stated how I did NOT want to be welcomed, I liked what I had before. Hopefully, the rest of the relationship will be smooth. Change is good.
Websites with databases down: Fortunately, this waited until Saturday (now) to happen. When ever a message is display that states anything like this, "Unable to connect to database server!", you know it is a very BAD thing. My consultant is not available on weekends, so I am relying on the technical support of the hosting company to pull this together for me. He has promised me that if I am patient, a directory can be moved and ALL issues will be resolved. And, based on the Rangers game on the radio (down 6-3), the Rangers need all of the support I can provide.

Attaching Signs to a Chain Link Fence

Sometimes a website is a good place to sell certain products, and sometimes it is not. Well, that has been my excuse up to this point with the Sign Link product. But, after my supplier keeps telling me they are a great product and I really should be selling more, I occasionally have to reevaluate my excuses. And, this post is my attempt to do so.

Sign Link is a plastic injection part designed to install signs or other items to ANY grid sized chain link fencing. Chain Link fencing is made in many grid sizes like 2.5”, 2.25, 2”, 1.75”, 1.5 and even 1”. The protrusions allow Sign Link to locate itself in the center of all the different grid sizes. Sign Link is also used to install signs on sign channel posts, like stop signs. The round protrusions on the back side fit into the holes of the channel post to prevent it from turning while installation of signs.

Building Your Own Outdoor Changeable Sign

Often I will get calls from customers who want to buy a large sign face to make their own sign. After we discuss the modification they will need to make to the sign face to support it (let alone the shipping cost), we often come to a point where they are VERY receptive to building their own sign. And, hopefully, after reading this, you can have the knowledge of eavesdropping on one of those conversations.

Black Signs:

What you'll need:

Black Sign Track
Black Sign Letters
A sign face (most often this is a piece of plywood cut to the necessary dimensions)

After the sign face is cut tot he proper dimensions, the face should be painted.
Put the first track in the middle (or whatever location fits your lettering scheme) Confirm the track is level by putting down a chalk line or whatever other method you are comfortable with.
To attach the track you can use staples or screws or whatever else you are comfortable with using.
For the additional pieces of track, you can use the letters as a "jig" to make sure spacing is correct. Or, a jig can also be purchased to be used for the same purpose.
If you are creating a sign face with 4 rows, then 5 pieces of track will be necessary. (The top and bottom pieces of track will only be used on one side, but the middle three pieces will be used on both sides.)
This is the typical letter recommendations I give: If you are a company that wants your sign to grab your customers attention, order two sets of 8 inch letters. (220 total) And, then choose the "key" words you would use to grab customers like "FREE", "SALE" and whatever else is appropriate for your company. Make sure you order TWO sets of the keywords if you have a double-sided sign. Pink and Yellow are the most common colors ordered. But, white, orange/red, and green are also available.
This is a rough guideline, I will be glad to answer any questions you may have about building/ordering your own sign.

Clear Track

Track - both 030 and 060 track available (Track is available for Gemini letters, but due to varying lengths available, please call)
Letters - match 030 letters or 060 letters to the same type of track
Sign Face - a variety of sign material will work for this. It depends on a variety of factors: indoor or outdoor, sign face color, and, of course, availability. Coroplast can be a good choice.

The above method pretty accurately describes the method used for this track. However, if indoors, gluing the track to the sign face might work fine. If outdoors, then screws or pop-rivets would be the best choice.

A customer sent me this image today claiming their sign doesn't work. Fortunately for her, the sign is working fine. When placing letters on the sign face, the letters must be inserted into the groove provide on the track face. If the letters are placed behind the sign track, the results are certainly going to be disappointing.

The folding sidewalk sign can be a very effective sign, but only if you agree to properly place letters on the sign face.

Plastic A-Frame with Erasable Face

I recently had a customer who was running into the need to spend some money at the end of the year. And, they knew the type of sign they wanted.

They wanted a sign with these features:

A frame style
Plastic construction
An face that would allow waterproof messages to be written.

Unfortunately, there was not a supplier that had this exact solution. So, we ordered in the product and created the sign pictured above. The plastic a-frame sign came from Gemini. And, the faces were the faces used on the WOWO signs.

The small challenge:

The sign frame allowed for a 24" x 36" face that was about 1/8" thick. Our sign material was close to 1/4" thick (10 mil). The sign frame had small "bump-ups" around the face to hold the thinner panels in place. And, our 10 mil panel would not easily fit in the sign space with these "bump-ups".

Solution:

The local shop I work out of makes the Black Signs and Velcro Changeable Banners. They have all of the necessary tools to easily cut 5 mil coroplast. And, although the 10 mil coroplast took more work, the removal of about 1/2" from both the length and the width allowed the WOWO faces to fit on the sign face. Once the faces fit, a deck screw and washer were used to attach the faces to the sign frame at all 4 corners. The original sign box was reused as the signs, faces and markers were shipped on to the customer.

Bottom Line:

SignsSeen prefers to work through its suppliers to provide a custom solution. But, as in this case, if it isn't possible, we will get the job done for you.

The plastic is made from plastic that is designed to be used outdoors in COLD and HOT climates.
Make sure to buy ONE more track than the number of lines you want to make. (i.e. If you are making a 4 line sign, make sure you you have 5 tracks to secure all rows on the TOP and BOTTTOM)
Consider getting a sign jig to make sure you set your track up with the right spacing. Otherwise, you start in the middle of the sign, and work your way out.
The track can be used with any size letters (If we don't see it on the website, we can make custom sizes). However, for maximum visibility, we recommend letters of 8 inches or greater. And, if you choose to pair up 8 inch letters and 16 inch letters, they can fit on the same sign! (the same for 10 inch and 20 inch letters) The bigger letter goes in the upper track, and then it "jumps" a track (see image above). So, you can "grab" your customers attention with the bigger letters. Depending on your industry, this might be words like: "SALE", "FREE", "LIVE", "SPECIAL" or "ONLY". Rental Signs across the country

I just had another call about this. And, I am not sure how much success the callers have after attempting to pursue the path I steer them upon. BUT, my standard answer is:

"No, I don't rent signs. But, I have seen portable signs at rental companies. This would be the type of companies that rent backhoes or other similar equipment."

Scammers Trying To Scam Sign Shops

SignsSeen was contacted by another "scammer". They have contacted us in the past on eBay, but I now occasionally get emails on banners and today, signs. When they only care about what payments you take and don't care about the shipping or product quality, it is a BIG clue. My most recent one today did NOT care about the color of the sign and wanted me to arrange shipping to Greenland. And, they ALWAYS seem to be a Dr., a minister or somebody else important. If it sounds like "easy" money, be cautious.

On my previous eBay transaction, I played him to the point where I received the check. My bank told me it was questionable. This confirmed what I thought, so I didn't deposit it. And, the SCAMMER then sent me emails concerned that I hadn't followed through. (scammer@kittymail.com) He disappeared pretty quickly when I told him I had contacted the authorities.

Bottom Line: Be very cautious when a nice order comes in from out-of-the-blue. It is much easier to live without the "cash", then to deal with the loss of product and the loss of cash. Purchase in confidence from SignsSeen. We take care of our customers, and follow-through on our commitments.

Problems with one manufactures signs

I work with some very good manufactures as I seek appropriate sign products for my customers. And, if I have a customer that has problems, I try to pass the information along. What follows is one customers concerns with one of the products, the Dual Sided Roadside Sign. In fairness, she bought just the sign faces and the letters, but her experience with the yellowing letters and uncooperative track is not unusual.

Her email follows:

Perhaps it has been two years since I purchased a signboard from your company for our church in XXXXXX, Ohio. The board is approximately 34 x 48, I don't remember the exact dimensions. I also purchased a set of letters, and then another set when the first set wasn't enough.

The sign has serious problems, and has become very difficult to work with. The horizontal strips of plastic that hold the letters and numbers in place are not glued in place exactly parallel, and sometimes the letters are too small and fall out, and sometimes they are too big and bulge out. After a while, depending on which line the letter went on, I would have to trim the letter to fit. Then when the letter was used on a different line, it would fall out. I am at the point now where every letter has to be taped in. The other problem is the vinyl letters warp in the sun. Many letters from the two sets of letters warped so badly and are no longer usable. I am at the point that I am no longer trying to use the sign.

I did not report this problem to the local company from which I purchased the sign. I am telling you this so you might make the necessary changes so other customers won't have the frustrating experience that we did.

Open Box and Carefully take out all parts, boxes and letters.
DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY UNTIL SIGN IS ASSEMBLED!!

Parts included:

2- Sign Uprights
2- Cross braces
4- Sign legs
8- Bolts & nuts
2- Letter Packs

To assemble your sign:

Lay sign board on its side. The sign board and uprights are marked with tape A or B. Now line up the sides A to A and B to B. Put the upright marked side to marked side of signs. Holes are pre-drilled and will match up when correctly installed.
Match sides (A) & (B) to each other. Take (4) flat-headed bolts and install them through sign into sign upright. Install nut on bolt and hand tighten until the flat-headed portion of the bolt is flush with the sign. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN NUT!
Slide cross braces on to sign uprights.
Slide legs into cross braces. Position sign and level; tighten (6) 1”cross brace bolts to secure sign into place.
Secure sign with sandbags placed on legs or drive a 12 inch spike nail through hole in bottom of plate of each leg.

5. RS232 Serial: “Communication Port (COM1)” – Set COM1 when you send a message. If you see COM2, then
set COM2.
USB: “USB Port (COM6) – Set COM6 when you send a message.
*COM Number changes depending on your computer.

Troubleshoot 2 Did you install the USB/Serial Converter Software?

1. Insert the CD Driver to CD-ROM.
2. Computer automatically starts wizard. “Add New Hardware Wizard”.
3. Click Next
4. Check “Search for the best driver for your device (recommended).”

Customer Spotlight of Sign Rental Business

I spoke to a customer of mine today, Budget Sign Rental. They are based in the Minneapolis, MN area. They are doing a few neat things with their signs:

He is building his business around renting primarily white-backed signs.
Every customer is given the best pricing, and the best possible customer service.
He is building his own signs. And, for track, he is using finish trim like would be used with vinyl siding. He started using the standard Gemini acrylic track, but it was buckling a bit in the heat. So, the finish trim option worked better for him. And, to attach the "track" to the board, he used a shallow wood screw with the washer built-in.
He bought multiple sets of Gemini Pronto Letters. Based on his research, he chose the 8 inch letters on 9 7/8 inch plastic. This would make sure the letters were visible from a good distance. And, the Gemini letters would make sure that they did not blow out due to the rigid plastic they are made with.
And, for the larger letters, he is using coroplast with vinyl lettering.

Changing Your Ad Message

Changing your sign insert / message copy is quick and easy;

Order a new message from any printer of your choice (using our sign print template, noted below)
Lift the clear sign cover of your Roof Top Sign all the way upward / off
Remove the old copy. *Roll it up gently for safe keeping.
Gently take your new paper sign and drop it over the top of your signs frame
Gently lower the sign cover down over your new sign copy until it is lowered all the way to the bottom (flush with both end brackets).

Note: If you remove the Roof Top Sign off the roof of your car to do these steps, be sure that your magnet feet are clean from any abrasive substances BEFORE you re-mount the sign to your roof.

Demoed Handheld LED Sign at College Baseball Game

At a recent Marist College baseball game played in Charlotte on the UNC - Charlotte campus, I watched my nephew play a very exciting game. They put all of the excitement into the first few innings, and then won as the scoring slowed in the latter innings.

While there, I provided morale support by using the Handheld LED Battery Sign. Without needing to reference the printed directions, both my kids and I had no problems putting in messages to communicate with my nephew. Using White Space on Your Portable Signs

When you have a sign of any type (Roadside Swinger Signs are shown above), it is always such a temptation to fill the sign and to make use of ALL of the available space. While this is certainly an option you can consider, don't choose a "full" sign without realizing the benefits of using the "white" space available on the sign.

Why should you consider using white space?

A briefer message while using of white space makes the sign MUCH more scannable. And, if the message can be scanned more quickly, then it is more easily processed and logged into their mind.
Longer messages take longer to put up on the sign. And, when it is cold out, this is not fun! :(
Whenever messages are changed, longer messages involve more time in putting away the letters being removed from the sign. Unless, of course, the letters are all put in one big bag and not organized at all.

Bottom Line: The easier to read the message, the easier for your customers to act on your signs message. If the message is to involved to read, the potential customer will "filter out" the message and not act on what your sign suggested. Sell more by having concise messages!!

Differences in Changeable Sign Lettes

Recently, a customer ordered a set of the wrong letters. They were confused about the type of letters they needed. I hope I can explain the differences for all who read this blog.

There are 5 types of changeable letters sold on my website:

030 letters: These are the most common type of letters. The most common size is "8 on 9". (8 inch letter on 8 15/16 or 9 inch panels) These letters are flexible enough that if bent over, they should be almost able to touch the other end. (not true if the letter has been in the sun awhile-the sun will make them yellow and likely crack if this is done.) The thickness of these letters is thinner than a credit card. And, if you choose to make your own sign using these letters, the correct track needs to be used. On some sizes, both CONDENSED and BOLD are available. Most commonly, they come as BLACK letters with RED numbers. With the '8 on 9', various colors are often available.
060 letters: Less common letters-this is mostly due to expense. The thicker letters use more plastic, and thus the price is higher. They are slightly thicker than a credit card. And, their BIGGEST advantage is if the sign is in a windy area, they sign letters are less likely to blow out when thicker letters are used. If this sign letter is chosen, the correct track must also be used.
Pronto Letters: These letters are 080 letters. They are made by Gemini. They are more expensive than other letters, but they offer these BIG advantages. They have a lifetime warranty, and individual letters can be ordered. With the other sets, it is uncommon to be able to order individual letters. Often, I have customer who want to order additional numbers or commonly used letters. The Gemini letters let this be done easily.
Swinger Letters: These are a thinner sign panel, but they are not a common size panel. They are used on Springer, Swinger, Tip 'n Roll, and Cartop II from Magic Master. Due to the product line available from Magic Master, the letters come in 2 sizes: 4 inch and 5 inch.
Black Sign Letters: These signs are created by applying vinyl to black 4 mil coroplast. The vinyl is usually of a very bright (neon) color. (e.g. Pink, Green, and Yellow are the most common. White, blue, and red are also available.) Track can be purchased, but often the Black Signs and letters are purchased together.

With this article I want to share with you a study that was done that shows just how valuable a sign is to the bottom line of every business.

In 1995 the University of San Diego did a study on the performance of on-premise signs. This study was done in two parts. The first part of the study involved analyzing a group of variables such as signage, location, population’s demographics, hours of operation, etc.. at 162 southern California major fast food chains. Each variable was tested at each of the 162 locations to help predict the impact on-premise signs have on:

1. annual sales revenues
2. annual number of transactions
3. the average dollar amount spent per transaction.

The study showed that the number of signs at a particular location directly affected both annual sales revenue and the number of annual customer transactions. Here are the exact findings of the study:

1. On average, one additional on-premise sign resulted in an increase in annual sales revenues of 4.75%. This translates to a $23,750 increase in average sales revenues for a typical store in the study group with annual sales of $500,000.
2. On average, one additional on-premise sign increased the annual number of transactions by 3.93%. This translates into more than 3,900 additional transactions for a store with an annual average of 100,000 transactions.
3. On average, one additional 36-square-foot wall sign added $0.06 per transaction, while one additional 144-square-foot pole sign added $0.78 per transaction.

Now for part two of the study. In part two of the study seven years of weekly sales data for Pier 1 Imports was analyzed. The data was analyzed so they could measure the effects of modifications, additions, or removal of on-premise signs on sales performance. As a result researchers found, and I quote, "on-premise signage has a statistically significant and financially substantive impact on the revenues of a site[and]... is a significant constituent of the factors causing the success of a retail endeavor." Here is a very brief summary of what the study found:

1. The addition of new signage to previously unsigned buildings, and the replacement of existing signage (generally, with larger signs) resulted in an average revenue increase of 5%.
2. The addition of a pole sign, or a plaza identity sign including the store's name, resulted in an average increase in weekly sales of 5-10%. The increase was attributed by the researchers to the new signs' enhancement of site visibility to passing traffic.
3. The addition of small directional signs indicating entrance and exit routes resulted in weekly sales increases ranging from 4-12%. The increases were attributed to the signs' ability to guide a site-bound shopper more than any specific advertising effect.

• Regulation of the size, number and location of signs – Local zoning and sign codes tend to regulate those 3 things. For instance, a specific code might specify that a “directional" sign must be within so many feet from the edge of the entry/exit or that a "freestanding"sign must be set back so many feet from the public right-of-way.

• Permit Applications & Approvals - Before the permit process begins the sign company or business owner must obtain an application from the local government office. Requirements vary from state to state but normally the applicant is required to submit information related to the construction and installation of the sign. The application fee has to be paid in full Provisions before your application will be reviewed.

• Provision for a variance – According to www.sba.gov a variance is a "flexibility" device that allows a local government to provide a property owner with relief from the normal application of a restriction in the zoning code, such as minimum lot or building size or set back requirements. If the visibility of your sign is compromised due to certain codes you should request a variance.

• Treatment of Nonconforming Signs & Amortization – It is not uncommon for local governments to change zoning and sign codes every now and again. It is very unlikely that the local government will change the zoning and sign codes entirely. If your business sign was in compliance with the “old” code but is not in compliance with the “new” code then your sign would be considered a “legal non-conforming sign”. As a business owner you have the right to keep your “legal non-conforming sign”. You are not required to bring the sign into compliance with the “new” code.

You want to be the first thing to come to their mind when they need what you are offering.

#2 – What type of street is your business located on? – The second thing to consider is what type of street your businessis located on. Are there one, two, three or even four lanes of traffic? The wider the street the less effective a small roadside is. Your sign would be masked because of all the traffic. You would need to mount your sign up higher to compensate for the loss of visibility.

Understanding How the First and Fourteenth Amendments affect the regulation of a business sign

Purchasing a sign for your business is probably one of the best investments you will make. But, before you go out and purchase a sign it is very important that you understand your rights as a sign owner. In this article I will discuss the First and Fourteenth Amendment as it pertains to having a business sign.

The First Amendment gives you the right of freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of the press and freedom of religious expression.

The Fourteenth Amendment (we will discuss it below) makes it so the sign code in your local area must comply with the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of expression. Therefore, whatever you say on your sign is protected by the constitution.

A big issue with sign code is whether or not it regulates a sign based on its content. Though it is not necessarily unconstitutional for a sign to be regulated by its content, the courts evaluate “content-based” regulations based on something that is known as “strict scrutiny”. According to Wikipedia.com and I quote “Strict scrutiny is the most stringent standard of judicial review used by United States courts reviewing federal law. Along with the lower standards of rational basis review and intermediate scrutiny, strict scrutiny is part of a hierarchy of standards courts employ to weigh an asserted government interest against a constitutional right or policy that conflicts with the manner in which the interest is being pursued. Strict scrutiny is applied based on the constitutional conflict at issue, regardless of whether a law or action of the U.S. federal government, a state government, or a local municipality is at issue.”

So here is what it boils down to. Any law that tries to regulate business signs in reference to the message that is displayed on that sign may be considered an unlawful intrusion on your constitutional rights.

The Fourteenth Amendment:

As stated above, The Fourteenth Amendment makes it so the sign code in your local area must comply with the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of expression. Therefore, whatever you say on your sign is protected by the constitution.

The following statement comes directly from www.sba.gov in reference to the Fourteenth Amendment

“In order to pass constitutional muster, the permitting, licensing, conditional use or variance request procedure must, at minimum, be structured to assure easy understanding of objectively based requirements. In addition, reasonable application fees, speedy decision on the application by the permitting authority, and recourse to automatic and swift appeal of any denial must be provided. A failure to provide any one of these minimum procedural requirements can give rise to a claim that the process violates the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.”

Your sign is a way for you to communicate your business presence. Failure to provide you with minimum due process will result in a “prior restraint” issue. According to Wikipedia.com prior restraint is defined as “a legal term referring to a government'sactions that prevent materials from being published. Censorship that requires a person to seek governmental permission in the form of a license or imprimatur before publishing anything constitutes prior restraint every time permission is denied. More recently, prior restraint has often taken the form of an injunction or other governmental order prohibiting the publication of a specific document or subject. Sometimes, the government becomes aware of a forthcoming publication on a particular subject and seeks to prevent it. In other cases, the government attempts to halt ongoing publication and prevent its resumption. These injunctions are also usually considered to be cases of prior restraint, because future publications are stopped before they start.”

Any regulatory decisions that affect signs must be based solely on objective, quantitative criteria. Failure to do so may render the code unenforceable.

Springer Sidewalk Sign on the beach?

Yes, you can place a Springer Sidewalk Sign on the beach. But, not many will be like this beach.

The Springer Ready-4-Graphics sign lends itself very easily to custom graphics. The graphics can be either printed on the face, or printed on a different material and applied to the sign face.
The sign can be either ballasted with water OR the very ample sand found all over the beach.
To change the sign face, additional blank faces can be purchased. Or, the sign face can be swapped out for a tracked sign face and then it can become a changeable letter sign.

Recently, a customer wanted to purchase some sign parts to make his own sign. He was being rather discrete about his purpose, but by the end of the conversation, he admitted his sign was to make political statements. And, what you see above, is the result.

Inserting your Swinger Letters into the sign face

I had a call this week from someone who had just purchased a new Swinger sign. As they were changing their messages, they were sliding each letter in from the edge. And, their problem was the sign track was coming off on the edges. Fortunately, we were able to call them back quickly and help them solve this problem.

When you create your messages on a Swinger©, Springer©, Tip 'n Roll © or any of the Message Boards ©, the letters should placed on the sign face in a particular way.

The sign letter should be put in the top track.
Then the letter should be bowed so the bottom of the letter can be dropped into the track below.
Continue until your message is completed.

Placing the letters on the sign face this way rather than sliding them into the proper message locations keeps the edges of the sign letter panel from cutting/slicing the track off of the sign face.

Does SignsSeen rent Portable Signs?

Well, no......

I often will get the phone call asking, "Do you rent signs?"

And, after asking what type they want and stating that it is not that expensive to buy some signs at SignsSeen, I often end up telling them to check at an equipment rental place to see what type of portable signs or banners they may have available.

And, although rental rates are high and often they end up paying rental fees that would allow them to buy the sign after 3 or 4 rentals, they often still pursue the rental.

So, if you want to rent, and IF buying a sign is not an option, I can recommend you also try and call the local equipment rental company.
